Longtime Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell died Tuesday, May 4, 2010 after a year-long battle with cancer.
He was 92.
In Part 3 of his last interview with Detroit Free Press Sports Editor, Gene Myers, Ernie
recalled his debut with the Tigers on April 19, 1960:
Right before the season, the Tigers and Indians made one
of the biggest trades in baseball history. The Tigers sent the batting champion, Harvey Kuenn, to the Indians for the home
run champion, Rocky Colavito.
"Sure enough, the first
game the Tigers played was in Cleveland in the big stadium. George Kell and I were there, and it was bitter cold, and they didn't have a booth for us. We sat out in the
open and they put a plank across the seats and made sort of a counter for us. We sat right among the fans. The
wind came off of Lake Erie, and it was about as cold as I've ever been. George and I were just anxious to get back
to the hotel and warm up -- and the game went 15 innings. Colavito and Kuenn played against each other in that first
game. It was quite a day."

Truly a great who will be fondly
remembered.
Our sympathy to Woodie's family, many friends, and fans.

From the official blog of The Detroit Athletic Company comes this story by Bill
Dowe: ".... many are unaware of the special
connection between Rocky Colavito and Willie Horton, and a story that could have come from the pages of a sappy baseball novel or a made for TV movie...."
